9:11 am
>> good morning. starting you off with a live look outdoors. it is 9:11. 33 degrees. look at the sun shining right on the water. bright blue skies out across the water today. the sun is up. the winds have died down. looking for good travel conditions across the mid-atlantic right now. not so great as you head into upstate new york.
9:12 am
the winds are very light in nature. especially compared to yesterday. we're seeing a southwesterly wind, and south to southwest as we go across the baltimore metro area as well. the winds right now reaching anywhere from about five miles per hour up to about 11 at dover air force base. hopefully you didn't see too much damage in your neighborhood. we did get a few reports of
9:13 am
power lines down because of the wind. here's the forecast across the state today. partly sunny in the mountains, 34 for their high temperatures. 37 around baltimore with sunshine. that sun extends down to the coast with ocean city at a high of 49 today. great day for the ravens as well, as long as you dress warm heading to m and t bank stadium. temperatures should be around 43. they will be dropping into the upper 30s throughout the game so have your purple scarf, your purple gloves, anything you can do to cheer on the ravens later today. we do have to watch as the storm comes in for christmas eve. watch it progress into monday. notice the wintry mix that starts to develop around baltimore. it's not going to be a pure snow. our chances of a white christmas are pretty slim. but it's still showing that there could be some sort of snow flake activity throughout the day tomorrow.
9:14 am
as far as any accumulation goes, very minimal amounts possible in carroll and frederick counties. anything that's going to accumulate will most likely be in the mountains. they already got snow from what happened this past weekend. here's a look at the forecast. 42 for a high. 46 christmas day with sunny skies. another storm comes wednesday into thursday. that could also bring a wintry mix, possibly some accumulating snow into thursday morning. we'll keep an eye on. still ahead, peter rancho is sitting down with me for this morning's q and a. add a personal touch to your holiday gifts with our simple gift wrapping ideas. first here's a look at some events going on around town.

>> just two days left for christmas. hopefully you have the presents picked out for your friends and family. here to make sure the presentation looks great as what's inside is our lifestyle gina pifer. good morning. how you doing? man, look at all this. it's amazing. >> it's a lot of fun making it.
9:18 am
lot of people wait until last minute. i'm guilty of that as well. they don't want to stand in line, get more paper. i'll show you how you can use what you have in your house. i want to show you one of the tricks to making it look like it came from a high end store. take the box or whatever shape you have and crease the edges cap go like this with these two fingers. see how finished it looks? makes such a difference instead it -- even if you didn't wrap it perfectly, if you crease it, it looks pretty. people say, oh, of course. this is the canvas for the rest of your gift wrapping. now, let me show you this. i made my own wrapping paper right here. >> wow. >> this i made. i'll show you some pieces. you know how sometimes you buy something and it's wrapped in like a piece of paper. i decided to make my own. i used newspaper. if you're reading the sunday paper, you can have wrapping
9:19 am
paper. this one has a car ad. you can even find something that's more to the person you're wrapping for. let me show you how to do it. take your wrapping paper. don't use a paper towel. take your piece of paper. small piece. wrap it all the way around. then skrufrj. >> like that? >> yeah. >> then you take some paint. take some paint. you put it in like a paper plate. you paint it. i use metallic. this is like a dollar. use a foam brush. when you paint it, the on thing that paints are the ridges. then you start unwrapping it. i don't want you to get messy. >> i'll spill it all over. >> this is what it ends up looking like. >> isn't it beautiful?
9:20 am
>> i just went out and got some branchs, right? i jut painted them silver. as you can see, this is what they end upped looking like. you can do a more natural look for someone. different one for this. over here i reused tissue paper. with tissue paper it gets worn from the tush show in the bag. skrut crumble it out. it looks deliberate rather than worn stuff on it. this is what i use, pieces of wrapping paper. you have button joy. i don't know what shirt it went to. thread it through some -- >> this is the jar. >> i made snow globes. this is fun to do. this i love. i made little apple pies out of cookie cutters. you can use the pie crust. i made the filling. then cook them for 20 minutes. this right here, if you want to gifb someone a get it that's food. i made my own rather than buying them. you wrap some ribbon around. right here, this is, you have pumpkin rolls or paper towel
9:21 am
rolls. i made pillow boxes. take one. just cut it in. you can jut do that. then wrap pieces of the ribbon around it. make sure you tape the ends otherwise they'll fall out. >> 30 seconds. >> really big gift. you can wrap a box. here i used brown paper bags to just wrap it. i used cinnamon because i love pit. smells pretty. picture gift, which i love. you can print out a picture of a person you're giving it to. i always forget who i'm giving the gift to. >> this is great. for more information, check the website. you want to make sure and do that. this is neat. really is. it's amazing what you can make and do and how great it looks. stay with us. coming up next john carry and your sunday. >> it's getting close to christmas. ideas for the weather.
9:22 am
>> ideas from somebody who likes to spend time in their garden. >> we're talking about last minute gifts on your sunday gardner is coming up. let's ring those chimes.
9:23 am
9:24 am
>> good morning. welcome in to sunday gardener. christmas is fast approaching. >> we're a day away. >> for those truly last minute gift ideas, we have some that relate to the garden or plants in your house. >> yeah.
9:25 am
this is -- >> what are you leaning on? >> this is a minigreen house. you can put your plants in here. this isn't going to save you -- like your gardening outside. you can cheat and get stuff out earlier. use it to get your seeds started. neat thing to have. >> absolutely. >> i have some tools here. i talked about these before. i have a little arthritis in my hands. instead of a straight handle that comes out, i can push down on this. really enjoy it. >> little garden scoop and scissors. >> every single person that works here gets a pair of these. use it to snip off any bad leaves. lot of this. just good garden gloefbs. i go through self-pair a year. i'm sure i'm not alone there. >> it keeps rose thorns from getting in your hands. >> if you have people with arthritis, some of these pruners are great. feel that handle.
9:26 am
this has a really nice handle on it so that your hand continues to move. try that. >> this part rolls around. >> it moves with your finger. this gifbs you extra on the cutting blade. it >>'s a lot easier on your hand. when you're out there pruning. this time when you're doing greens or whatever, it's great to use. for you weather guys. >> okay. >> that's a grometer, whatever it's called. >> it talks about humidity and air temperature which are very good when they combine. also whether it's outside. if you want to measure rain, highs and lows, things like that. it's very important. >> we have a rain gauge for that. this is one of the more important tools that a gardener can have. especially if you have new plants going in. you know you need an inch of water a week. you can check it. >> we talked about bird feeders before and gardening with
9:27 am
squirrels and whatnot. this is a different one. >> i really like this. this has two different sizes. one for your seed and the other for your regular micked bird seed. this is great for finches. they can all be together. >> dual. . these things are just -- >> these are bird baths. isn't that beautiful. this could freeze in the wintertime. we have things for that, some deicers and stuff. >> in the summer, especially a low spot in the garden. that's the center point t vocal point. >> things like bird houses are good. grow lights. lot of your plants are starting to stress a little bit. this is great. audit to a timer. >> and for a little whimsy. >> he's a little smoker, incense burner. i picked a little farmer for the
9:28 am
urban farmers in your life. >> the little incense goes in. >> comes off. the incense goes in there. >> i see. >> then it's got smoke coming out. that's kind of fun. we had a couple garden themed one of those. this is a fun thing. garden tools are always appreciated, garden books. >> this is great. my knees love this. you can sit while you're gardening or reverse it and kneel. >> i have a hard time getting up. helps me push right on up. >> great. get one of these things. especially when you have a lot of weeding to do i'm not a big heavy mull cher. >> things like st. francis. >> it will look good over there. >> they can be indoor/outdoor. primarily indoor. i don't know if you can hear this sound behind us. these are a great idea.
9:29 am
>> if you can spin to your right. >> wind chimes. all different sizes. you can get high tones or get the deep deep tones. so it's just another thing. there's just so much going on in the garden. >> right. >> last minute gifts. we're out of time. thanks for joining us this morning. merry christmas. see you next week. >> if you have a gardening questioning, send it to sunday gardener. all go on our website. >> sound like the announcers i hear all the time when i was a kid. speed announcers. time is 9:29. 40 degrees on tv hill.
9:30 am
9:31 am
>> welcome back to 11 news
9:32 am
sunday morning. thanks for being with us. >> take a look outside with ava. >> temperatures are on the chilly side. but at least we have much less wind than yesterday. and the sun is out in full force. overall, it is going to be a mrez and sunday. 33 right now. the dew point low at 19 degrees. humidity at 56%. winds south, seven miles per hour. just a few clouds today. lot of sunshine and lighter winds. winds from the southwest five to ten miles per hour. high temperatures ranging from 45 to 50. details are coming up in the seven day forecast. time now for our sunday morning q and a. good morning. thanks for coming in. >> great to be here. merry christmas. happy new year. >> same to you. nice red tie. >> thank you.
9:33 am
>> you announced you're not going to run for governor. you're going to stick with the job you have. >> what a great decision. i have the best job in maryland. i'm independently elected. people love my independent brand. they like the idea that i'm fiscally moderate. the governor is obviously a big deal in maryland, but i have got a great job. perfect role for me. i'm delighted to be running for re-election, as long as the voters can put up with me. >> we'll see what happens. same sex couples and filing taxes this year. there's some things they need to keep in mind. >> this is an important issue. the federal government prohibits same sex couples from filing as married couples. and so obviously, with the result of the referendum, january 1st, same sex couples are legal. i am guaranteeing to same sex married couples in maryland when they file their taxes in 2014, they're gonna be able to file
9:34 am
just like every other married couple. >> whether it's federal or state? >> state taxes. the federal government will still prohibit them under their legislation to -- they are not going to be able to file like other married couples, but in maryland, for state taxes, we're going to guarantee that we make the statutory change. we have to have a law change, or a regulatory change. but it's only the fair thing to do. these folks going through this whole referendum exercise. it's now legal. they should have every right that other married couples have. ironically, going to pay slightly higher taxes because of the marriage penalties. but it's very important to people. i supported question six. this is a big deal for them, for everyone. and we're going to help folks. >> we've got two more days in shopping maryland. you're a big proponent of shop
9:35 am
local. are you seeing that happening? >> yes. i'm encouraging everyone to do their last minute shopping in local stores in maryland. good for the economy. get off the internet, shop locally. if you walk around the main streets in mared, you know there are a lot of stores. the recession is still affecting a lot of businesses. this will be helpful. >> you have some concern about the death tax. talk about that. >> welsh here's the problem in maryland. for the last six years we raised every tax imaginable. income tax, sales tax, alcohol tax. it's an endless series of fees and tax increases. that hurts the economy because it takes money out of people's pockets. jobs are what people need. i'm suggesting in the next session the ledge slates chur give maryland taxpayers a break. just keep it as is. let's get the private sector to hire people again. then we can move forward.
9:36 am
on the gas tax, which everyone's talking about, first pay back the billion dollars to locals that have been raided from the trust fund for their highway user fees. once you pay that back to the general fund, you can talk about it. >> let's talk about the fiscal cliff. >> fiscal cliff is just a night mare because it creates all this uncertainty. people are making decisions at the end of the year with their accounts and this and that trying to avoid what the fiscal cliff might bring. it's a big mess. it affects maryland because we're not joined at the hip. we're joined at the knee, hip, back, shoulder. with the federal government. if they can't resolve that in a timely fashion, we're going to see a big impact negatively on the economy. >> gambling in maryland. not your thing. when you look at the record
9:37 am
that's coming in, what do you think at this juncture about it? >> it's -- we're going down an alley that has no good ending to it. we're taking money out of consumer's pockets that should be spent in small businesses. and because we're a consumer driven economy, we're not going to have the type of employment that we need in order for our people back at work. driving up here through baltimore, seeing the boarded up homes on norfolk avenue, the thing that struck me is that we need to have jobs. and when you take money out from gambling and taxes, people's pockets, you remove the momentum for creating private sector jobs. >> we're out of time but i want to ask you, what are you going to do in this next year? we mentioned gas taxes to help generate and change things here
9:38 am
in maryland. >> just want to bring us back to the center. common sense fiscal moderation is what the state needs and if we do that, we'll see a big job. we have a very strong economy at the state. right now it's paralyzed. we're almost dead last in the country in private sector job development and private sector wage growth. that's a problem. that will be my focus during the rest of the year. >> all right. thank you. >> great seeing you. >> happy holidays. >> don't go away, we'll be right
9:39 am
9:40 am
>> good morning. there's a beautiful shot of sky cam looking on the water. skies are shining. temperatures are just a little
9:41 am
chilly but they're crisp toe start off the day. 33. what an improvement from yesterday as we had very strong winds across the area. fortunately it is dry for anyone doing last minute shopping. also if you're trying to travel to your holiday destination. we have dry conditions across maryland down the east coast. we just watched a little rain coming in from the deep south. also lake effect snow in upstate new york. that's causing problems in and out of syracuse. also worried about snow in the rocky mountains and rain along the west coast. a large chunk of the country is seeing dry weather on this very busy day. let's switch over to temperatures across the state. 30s in parkton, 30 westminster. as you look into western maryland it's in the mid to upper 20s right now. the lower eastern shore of maryland in the mid 30s. looking at the temperatures across the region. little chilly. it should be easing up.
9:42 am
lighter winds make such a difference in the forecast. compared to the gusts near 50 miles per hour yesterday. we're seeing wind anywheres from five to ten miles an hour right now. we don't really have concerns of damage. no more concerns of power outages. overall, pleasant conditions as we wrap up this weekend. 37 for the high temperature around baltimore today. mountains will be much colder mainly in the 30s with partly sunny skies. even the mountains will have much wilder winds. if you plan to go to the ravens game, kickoff temperature at 43 degrees. we drop down into the 30s throughout the rest of the game. make sure you wear the purple scarfs, hats and gloves. anything you can do to stay warm and happy cheering on the ravens. this is what's going to be coming our way. a storm system building throughout the day monday. it interacts with some cold air. not very likely we're going to see much snow, but maybe a few snow flakes around baltimore.
9:43 am
this is going to be a rain/snow mix very light in nature. as far as accumulations go, it wouldn't be more than an inch in the mountains. even carroll county could see minimal amounts. baltimore county will see much more snow. 46 for the high. we have another storm wednesday into thursday that could bring another wintry mix. we'll have to keep an eye on everyone heading back from the holidays. we're here with how to get some celebrity styles for less. we love it when you come in. this is a day people do last minute shopping. >> last minute shopping or plan for new year's.
9:44 am
anybody can wear it. it's only $15. we have a fun, sparkley necklace. this is very new year's. kind of looks like that ball that comes down. this is $33. comes with matching ball dropping earrings. we also have one that's purple. earring and necklace as well. >> that's a good deal. look at these. >> i know. how's this for new year's. got to have a bag like this. we have a picture of rebecca rojmin. this is a designer that's from britain. she designs these kind of bags. hers are like in excess of $300. these are only $29. >> i like your version. then the ears.
9:45 am
if you don't like -- we have lots of other options if you don't want this. angelina jolie. angelina jolie wore these. our version is almost exactly like those. we sell a lot of these earrings. they are only $19. >> that photo of hers is very well known. >> now we have ashante. i love this picture of her. got a very new outfit on. this is called glimmer. this is $33 as well. this is kind of sparkley to have this on your crist. >> you don't need to wear one on each wrist. some people do? >> it's fun, right? more sparkle the better. >> rings. >> cocktail rings are a must. you have to have one. these are $19.
9:46 am
we have a picture of sophia vergara wearing one. lots to choose from. this is jumbled. $19. >> yeah. >> they're pretty much $19. like i said, if you want a reason to sparkle, why not? right? >> we have a deal for people. >> 20% off today. actually all week. the week'shqhqhqhqhqhqhqhqhqhqhq

9:49 am
>> welcome back. time for holiday brunch. joining us this morning is a special guest, one of our reporters here at wbal. you brought your son rex here. how old is he? >> rex is -- how old are you? >> 4. >> he's 4 years old. >> great. you're going to help your mom make a special treat for the holidays. what is this called? chicken kre sent squares. this is a little secret we got from a friend of ours, lauren conner. we make it all the time. you could probably make it by yourself, couldn't you, by now? maybe. >> it's very kid friendly. >> it is. >> where are we going to start.
9:50 am
we started with a container of kre sent rolls. i already popped it. that's the hardest part. >> that's scary. >> they come in triangle shapes like this. rex job is to put two tie triangles together. >> you want a bigger shape from them. make sure the seam is closed. so while vehicles doing that i'm going to take some cooked chicken which i had left over from the other night. we cooked a seven pound chicken, we only ate half of it. it's a great use for a leftover. no one in my house will eat them except me. like these, not enough to eat again but enough to stir in. >> could you add other vegetables? >> i have experimented with everything. we made this last night and added barbecue sauce. if the chicken's seasoned you don't have to worry about that. the main thing you do have to make sure you have is cream
9:51 am
cheese. this has been softening up. i don't even normally like cream cheese, but it binds everything together in this recipe. and also, little bit of milk. rex, would you like to pour this? >> any variation of milk would work. >> and we use low fat cream cheesed. we served it to our family from louisiana last night. they didn't complain about the low fat. >> if you don't tell them it's no fat, they won't notice. >> rex, do you want to help me mix this up? we got two big spoons here. he's wonderful. there's lots of different variations. the idea is you mix it all together. then you start to stir in the mixture into the rectangles that you've made. >> mixing it up. placing it in there. how much goes in each rectangle. >> it makes a lot. you don't want to overfill because then it's going to ooze
9:52 am
out. you start scooping some in there. good job, rex. i didn't soften the cream cheese as much as i should have. this will work. >> you'll be softening it. >> it's all going to bake together. >> exactly. >> we do this. and then we pulled together the corners. rex is really good at that. then we twist it at the top. >> i can tell you've done this before, rex. >> he knows you've got to pinch the seam. you can spray it with olive oil and sprinkle bread crumbs on it. you put this in the oven on 350 for about 25 minutes. then they will puff up. these we ate for dinner last night. i just microwaved them again so they flattened out. they're really good. so they puff up. >> i love it. >> it's a great use for
9:53 am
leftovers. you can, these flattened out overnight. you've got the cresent roll. >> you've got your vegetables, your dairy and the meat as well. put it all into one. makes it easy for kids to eat. >> you can just make a salad onned the side and you're done. >> you can log on to our website or self-a self-addressed envelope to sunday brunch -- >> stay with us.
